Scottish Community – please support our good friends at the Scottish Banner, the world’s best Scottish newspaper celebrating all things about the Scottish diaspora.

As Covid-19 continues to cause great concern and disruption amongst the world, which certainly includes our very own Scottish community, with all facets of business facing never before seen challenges.

One of the industries severely impacted are those of us in publishing, with many titles around the country already folding, and due to cancelled events, travel restrictions and impacts to Scottish businesses the Scottish Banner has lost a great deal of advertising revenue going forward. In addition, Scottish festivals are currently not taking place causing a further major cut to revenue.

They are hoping Scottish community organisations can rally their memberships and encourage them to subscribe or purchase the Scottish Banner. Every reader that buys their own print or digital copy makes a big difference to keeping the Scottish Banner viable. Many members may pick up copies at events which are currently cancelled, not feel comfortable going to newsagents each month and may be missing editions, or rely on a copy to be passed on to them from someone else.

Perhaps you can mention on your website, social media and/or database/newsletter that we are now reliant more than ever in readers buying each issue, each month.

If you are not a subscriber, please consider being one or you are looking for a gift for someone that’s a little different. $25.00 buys a years’ worth of excellent reading.

Celebrating connections new and old!

Online concerts;

The Camperdown Robert Burns Festival is set to launch its virtual festival on Saturday the 4th of July with ‘Live Concerts’ streaming on Facebook and Instagram along with new content on our website camperdownburnsfestival.com.au.

Luke Plumb, Fiona Ross, Kate Bourke and The Cornerhouse Band will be the first of our performers over our virtual festival weekend. We plan to present further live streaming concerts later in the year.

For those not on social media you can still see our Facebook and Instagram feeds via our website.

Our website will feature an array of material that tells the story of the festival while showcasing our beautiful district and spotlighting the many connections that Camperdown Victoria has to Scottish heritage.

What might you find on the website?

Festival Coordinator, Catherine O’Flynn, shares an Acknowledgement of Country filmed at The Wombeetch Puyuun Reconciliation Park.

From across the waves Robert Burns World Federation President, Brian Goldie, is interviewed by Festival Chairperson Dr John Menzies OAM. This includes a mini tour of Camperdown’s town square and shows the Robert Burns statue located in the Corangamite Shire offices.

Ceilidh demonstrates and invites everyone to have a go at Cape Breton dancing. There’s also Highland Dancing footage and a short excerpt looking at the details of highland dance costume.

Camperdown & District Heritage Centre Inc. volunteers have provided a video that gives the virtual festival a sense of its historical context. There are lecture series previews from Ruth Pullin, David Jellie & Andrew Lemon whose topics range from ‘von Guérard and the Scots of the Western District’, ‘The legacy of Camperdown district Scots and the Manifolds to Australian horse racing’ and ‘The legacy of Scottish Engineers, Telford and McAdam, to Australia’s roads’.

Warrnambool Pipe Band, led by Pipe Major Donald Blair OAM, invite you to virtually meet some of their players as they share tunes from their respective homes.

Our musicians and poets have kindly allowed us material that will provide the virtual festival’s soundtrack with links to discover more about the artists.

Everyone has contributed in new and unexpected ways – almost a Gala dinner virtual feast! Speaking of which the festivals ever popular dinner gathering is celebrated virtually with footage from previous years to give you a taste. There’ll be an ‘address or few’ to the haggis to discover and much more!

Festival Chairperson, Dr John Menzies OAM said “I have been encouraged, and pleasantly surprised how others from far away are keen to support us. The festival committee has been inspired by the contributions received. We’re very excited to be celebrating connections new and old.
